A First Look at the New 2022 Subaru Legacy

Performance, Engine and Transmission

Powering the Legacy is a horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine generating 182 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. This is the base engine, and it's paired with the continuously variable automatic transmission, as are all the other engines. A 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with an output of 260 horsepower powers the Limited XT and Touring XT models. All the models possess an all-wheel drivetrain. The Legacy's new suspension and steering provide improved ride quality.

Interior

The Legacy is a standout when it comes to interior space. It possesses a forward headroom of 39.4 inches and legroom of 42.8 inches, outshining most of the family sedans in its caliber. It offers a spacious cabin in terms of cargo and passenger accommodation. Up to five occupants can be accommodated, and 15.1 cubic feet of luggage fits in the back with all seats upright. The interior is made of quality cloth upholstery with higher trim models having leather. Comfort is optimized on the top trims with features such as ventilated seats, sunroof, heated steering wheel, power-adjustable passenger seat and proximity keyless entry and push-button start.

Technology and Entertainment

Subaru still carries its tradition with the Legacy of equipping its vehicles with adequate technologies and entertainment features. The entry model features dual 7.0-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration and a four-speaker sound system. Also coming standard are Subaru's STARLINK® infotainment system, two USB ports, satellite radio and automatic climate control. The technology gets better as you move up the trims with trims like the Premium model having features like the 11.6-inch touchscreens and a six-speaker audio system. The Limited and XT models take it further with a 12-speaker audio system and a built-in navigation interface.

Exterior

Being a typical family sedan, the Legacy measures 190.6 inches long, 59.1 inches tall and 72.4 inches wide. The base model rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, while the mid-level and higher trims ride on 18-inch wheels. Unlike the previous models, the power moonroof is now offered as early as the Sport trim. Adaptive LED headlights are standard across all the trims.

Safety

The Legacy has been touted as one of the best picks when it comes to safety. This sedan is equipped with tons of safety and driver-assistance features, some of which come standard while others are optional. Every model has the Subaru EyeSight® package of active safety features, which includes adaptive cruise control that adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance with the car ahead; lane-centering, which makes minor steering adjustments to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane; a lane-departure warning that notifies you of any unintentional drifts out of the lane; forward collision alert that warns you of impending frontal collisions, automatic high beam control and forward automatic emergency braking. Other optional features include front-view camera, driver monitoring system and reverse automatic braking.
